How do I reverse a car in a straight line?

I want to get ready for the parking section of my driver’s test. How do I reverse a car in a straight line?

Answer
That’s so exciting! Reversing a car in a straight line is easier with practice, but let’s walk you through how to nail it for your driver’s test.
To reverse your car in a straight line:
  • Begin by scanning each of your mirrors for oncoming vehicles, pedestrians, or other items you may back into.
  • After the coast is clear, position your vehicle parallel to the curb, but allow yourself enough space to maneuver without scraping your wheels against it.
  • Once you’ve lined your car up with the curb, begin to slowly reverse while holding the steering wheel straight and making small adjustments if the car begins to veer in one direction or another. You can tilt your side mirrors down towards the sides of your vehicle to monitor your position relative to the curb and to check for objects you may hit.
  • Proceed to reverse at a speed of less than one mph until you’ve reached your intended parking position.
Reversing in a straight line will become easier with more practice. And, keep in mind, nobody is a parking master.
