How do I report hit-and-run damage to my car insurance company?

I was parked on the street overnight and when I came out this morning, my car had been damaged by a hit-and-run. I definitely can't pay for this out of pocket, but I've never had to deal with something like this before. How do I report this incident to my insurance company?

“I’m so sorry this happened—accidents are always awful, and hit-and-runs can be incredibly frustrating. However, before you worry about contacting your
car insurance
company, start by contacting the police to get an accident report.
After you call the police, call your car insurance claims agent so they can begin the claims process. Keep in mind that if you have
liability coverage
only, the hit-and-run damage may not be covered.
However, some car insurance companies cover the damage if you have
uninsured motorist property damage
.
Even though you didn’t witness the accident, here are some of the questions the claims agent might as you:
  • What date did the event occur?
  • What was the approximate time of the event?
  • What were the weather conditions like last night?
  • Was your car parked legally?
If your car insurance rates go up as a result of a hit-and-run–and they might–you may also want to consider shopping around for car insurance. Hop on the

Best of luck with the repairs, and with filing your claim. This might all feel overwhelming, but you’ve got this.”
