How do I replace the water pump on a 2001 Toyota Camry?

If possible, I always like to do my own work on my vehicles. I have a Camry that keeps overheating, and I’m pretty sure the water pump is the issue. How can I replace the water pump on my 2001 Toyota Camry?

Answer
A faulty water pump can certainly cause your car to overheat. However, replacing it is a huge undertaking best left to those with a good deal of mechanical knowledge.
If you’re up to the challenge, follow these steps to replace the water pump on your 2001 Toyota Camry:
  1. Put your car on jack stands.
  2. Remove the tensioner spring from the underside of the vehicle.
  3. Open the radiator pet cock to drain the fluid. Make sure to put a bucket or drip pan below to catch the liquid.
  4. Remove the alternator mounting bracket.
  5. Remove the upper radiator hose.
  6. Take off the plastic pipe holding the thermostat.
  7. Unbolt the two 10-mm nuts from the metal pipe bracket.
  8. Unbolt the old pump and remove it.
  9. Put the new water pump in place.
  10. Complete these same steps in reverse order to put the car back together.
