How do I replace my lost car keys?

I’ve looked everywhere for my car keys—retraced my steps, checked in the yard, tore apart the house, everything, and I just can’t find them. How do I go about replacing lost car keys?

Sorry to hear about your keys! Luckily, lost keys aren’t the end of the world, and replacing them isn’t too hard. To replace a car key, you’ll need to call a locksmith and have them cut or program a new one for you.
Before calling, make sure you can provide them with the following information:
  • Your vehicle identification number (VIN)
  • Your vehicle registration
  • Your vehicle make and model
  • A personal ID
  • Your current location
Nowadays, locksmiths are able to replace just about any kind of key: traditional, remote key fob, switchblade, transponder, etc. and you won’t need to worry about picking it up at their shop—most locksmiths have mobile equipment they can bring to you.
Depending on the type of key you’ve lost, expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $350, with traditional keys and remote key fobs being the cheapest, whereas transponders and smart keys are more expensive.
