How do I replace a Subaru Forester brake light?

I got pulled over the other day because one of my tail lights is out. I think it’s the brake light. How do I replace a Subaru Forester brake light?

Oh no, sorry to hear you got pulled over! To replace a Subaru Forester brake light, you will need a replacement bulb, a Phillips head screwdriver, and possibly a plastic pry bar.
There are quite a few lights on the rear end of your vehicle. Make sure you determine which one is out before you buy a bulb. Get a friend to stand behind the vehicle—or set your phone up to record yourself—if you need help figuring it out.
If you have a 2014-2017 Subaru Forester, here are the lights you may need:
  • Brake: 7443
  • Rear turn signal: 7740A or WY21W
  • Reverse: 921 or W16W
  • Rear side marker: 2825 or W5W
When you’re ready to replace the bulb, here’s the process:
  • Open the tailgate
  • Remove the bolts on the inner edge of the light
  • Find the pegs that slot into the plastic button head mount, and slowly pull the housing off
  • Use the plastic pry bar if necessary (be gentle to avoid cracking the plastic)
  • Locate the burnt out bulb (brake light is the larger bulb at the top inner corner)
  • Wear gloves and swap out the old lightbulb
If the bulb burned out due to regular wear and tear, you’ll have to pay out-of-pocket to replace it. However, if it was damaged by something, it
may be covered
