How do I remove the running boards on my Ford Explorer?

I don’t use them much, so I’d rather go without any running boards to shave some weight off my truck. What’s the easiest way to get rid of the running boards on an Explorer?

Hopefully, taking off some weight can help with your fuel economy!
To remove the running boards on your Ford Explorer, follow these steps:
  1. Use a floor jack to lift one side of the SUV. Use two jack stands—one in the front and another in the rear—to secure the vehicle so you can safely perform the work.
  2. Use two more jack stands to hold up the running board so it doesn’t fall when you loosen its bolts.
  3. Remove the bolts that mount the running board to the frame of the vehicle using a socket wrench. Set the running board aside.
  4. Lower the vehicle to the ground using your floor jack, and repeat on the other side.
Just like that, you’ve removed the running boards from your Ford Explorer.
