How do I remove someone's name from a car title?

I have been sharing a car with my sister, but she just upgraded her vehicle. How do I get her name off the car title?

You'll need to visit the DMV to
remove a name from a car title
—but the process will depend on the title type.
  • If the car title has your name + ‘AND/OR’ the second party’s name: You can change the title without their permission through the DMV.
  • If the car title has your name + ‘AND’ before the second party’s name: You’ll need permission to change the title. In this case, get the other person to sign the title over to you. If they are not in the same area, you’ll need to mail it to them and wait for them to mail it back.
Once you're all set, follow these steps to complete your title change:
  • Step 1: Go to your local DMV.
  • Step 2: Tell them you need the title changed to only your name.
  • Step 3: Provide all the necessary signatures.
You’ll receive a new title and tags in the mail in about 2-3 weeks, on average.
