How do I remove someone from my car title?

My wife and I recently separated (on good terms). She agreed that I can have our truck as part of the settlement. However, her name is still on the title, and as I've never been divorced before, I'm not sure how to take it off. How do I remove her name?

To remove your wife from your
car title
, you can follow a similar process to transferring the title when selling your car.
First, you’ll have to identify the type of wording used between names on your joint title. The options are “and”, “or”, and sometimes “and/or”.
This applies to vehicles in every state—except for
Arizona
—and here’s what you need to know:
  • If the names are joined by "and": both people on the title will have to sign as "sellers" and the person remaining on the title will be listed as the "buyer".
  • If the names are joined by "or" or "and/or": the person being removed from the title will pose as the "seller," and the person who will remain on the title can sign as the "buyer".
  • In Arizona: If the names on the title are joined by "and/or", it’s treated as if both names were joined by "and". Both people listed must sign as sellers.
Once you’ve distinguished the wording on your title, you can proceed with the following steps:
  • Step 1: On the back of the title, you’ll fill out the form according to the wording rules explained above. You may have to do this in front of a notary in some states. In other states, a divorce decree will waive her signature.
  • Step 2: You’ll need to go to your state’s DMV and show them the new title, and your divorce decree (just in case), and fill out new paperwork to have the title and registration in your name only.
