How do I remove a car from my insurance policy?
How can I remove a car from my insurance policy? I want to give my son my old car since I got a new one, but he has to get his own insurance.

Congrats to your son! He must be happy with his new ride.
Before you give your son your car, you’re going to have to make a few calls and sign a few papers.
First, as you’ve already guessed, you’re going to need to remove your car from your insurance. I’m assuming you have both cars on your policy (your new one and your old one). If that’s the case, all you’ll have to do is call your insurance agent and ask them to remove your old car from your policy.
But if your old car is the sole car on your policy, then you must add your new car to your policy before removing your old vehicle. This will ensure you’re not canceling your policy, in which case you might have to deal with cancellation fees.
Now onto transferring the title of your vehicle. All you need to do is:
- Fill out a transfer certificate
- Have your son take the certificate to the DMV to officially transfer the title over to him
Keep in mind this process does differ from state to state, so visit your local DMV’s website or call the DMV for specifics.
