How do I register my car in South Carolina?
I’m moving to South Carolina. What do I need to do to make sure my car is registered and ready for the road when I’m all unpacked?

We wish you a happy and safe move! Moving your car registration and insurance to
South Carolina
requires a few steps, but we’ll walk you through them.First, you’ll need to:
- Get a South Carolina driver’s license
- Update your insuranceto reflect your new address (and make sure your provider issues policies in SC)
- Pay SC property taxes with your county treasurer (get a receipt and don’t lose it)
Now you can go to the South Carolina DMV. Here’s what you need to take with you:
- The original property tax receipt you got from your county treasurer
- Your previous (out-of-state) title and registration
- Proof of identity (driver’s license, passport, etc.)
- Power of attorney statement (if you have a lien)
Be prepared to pay an infrastructure maintenance fee and title and registration fee, too.
