How do I register and insure a car in Massachusetts?

I'm buying a car for the first time. I'm not sure what comes first, but I know I need to register and insure my car. How would I do that?

Whether you're
buying
or
selling
, here’s how to register and insure a new car in
Massachusetts
:
  • Decide how much
    car insurance
coverage you need: Your policy must at least meet
    Massachusetts’ minimum car insurance requirements
, but it’s usually wise to have additional coverage if you can afford it.
  • Shop for auto insurance quotes
: You can do this by going online, calling companies, or using an insurance comparison app like
    Jerry
. Input your vehicle details, personal details, and desired coverage.
  • Select a provider and buy your policy: Once you find the right rate on the coverage you want, purchase the policy. You’ll need
    proof of insurance
    before you can
    register your car
    .
  • Register your vehicle at the RMV: You’ll need to complete the Registration and Title Application, provide proof of insurance and ownership, and pay the necessary fees. If you bought the car from a dealership, the dealer will likely take care of the registration application for you.
  • Complete a
    vehicle inspection
: You have seven days after registering your vehicle in Massachusetts to complete this inspection. If your car passes, you are all set!
