How do I read SRS codes on a Honda?

My SRS light illuminated, and I don’t know what this means. My friend said to read the SRS codes to determine what is wrong with the vehicle, but I’ve never done that before. How do I read codes on a Honda?

Your friend is correct! Reading the codes will help you diagnose the issue.
To read the SRS codes on your Honda, follow these instructions:
  • Step 1: Unlock your car and open the driver’s side door. Located under the steering wheel and dashboard is the ODBII port. You may need to crouch down to find this port.
  • Step 2: Take a paper clip and untwist it to form a U shape.
  • Step 3: Insert the paper clip into the ODBII port four and port nine.
  • Step 4: Take your car key and turn on the car, but don’t start the vehicle (just put it in accessory mode). You should see the SRS
    light
    begin flashing.
There are two parts to an SRS code—the main code and subcode. To read the main code, count the number of flashes.
  • For values one to 10, these will be single flashes.
  • For values 11-15, every four fast flashes equals the value of 10, add additional flashes together. For example, if there is one set of four continuous blinks, followed by two single flashes, this equals 12.
  • For values 20 or more, you’ll see two sets of four continuous flashes, which equals 20, then add further flashes together. For example, if there are two sets of four continuous flashes, followed by one single flash, this equals 21.
To read the subcode, count the number of blinks you see. If there are five single blinks, this equals 5. To put the code together, if the main code is 21, and the subcode is 1, this represents DTC 21-1.
Refer to the SRS code chart that details the meaning of each code to interpret your car’s issue. You can find this chart by doing a Google search.
Since you are taking time to read SRS codes, you clearly care about your vehicle. So, take some time to review your auto policy to make sure it meets your current needs—and you aren’t overpaying for it.
