How do I put my BMW in neutral for towing?

I have to get my BMW towed to the mechanic later this week. How can I put my car into neutral while it’s being towed?

Putting your car into neutral is fairly straightforward no matter why you’re doing it. To put your
BMW
 into neutral for towing, turn off the engine and put the gear shift into neutral. Alternatively, you can turn off the engine, put the gear shift into park, press down on the gas, and then shift into neutral.
Putting your car into neutral when it’s being towed is vital as it lessens the risk of damage to both your car and to the vehicle towing it. Shifting your BMW into neutral will reduce the strain on your transmission and decrease wear and tear on other parts of the car.
You should also take the following safety precautions ahead of having your BMW towed:
  • Engage the parking brake
  • Make sure your wheels are properly aligned
  • Ensure your BMW’s lights and signals are functioning properly
