How do I put a car in my name?

I’m purchasing a used car from a private seller. How do I make sure the car is in my name?

Congratulations on your new car! Follow these steps to put the car in your name:
  • Contact your local DMV: Find out the specific requirements for a title transfer in your state.
  • Obtain the title: The seller should sign over the title to you.
  • Visit the DMV: Bring the signed title to the DMV and complete the registration process.
Depending on your state’s requirements, the DMV may also require:
  • The current odometer reading
  • A bill of sale signed by both parties
  • Notice of transfer
  • Recent emission test results
Once the DMV approves your paperwork, you’ll receive temporary registration papers until your official ones come in the mail.
