How do I open the gas tank on a BMW 528i?
So I hadn't driven a car in about 20 years until I recently decided to get my license again! Saw an old friend and his wife for dinner, and they let me take their BMW out for a spin. But when I went to fill it back up after taking it for a joyride, I couldn’t figure out how to get the gas tank open—there was no indent for my finger to pull the tank door open. I returned the thing empty, I was so embarrassed. For next time, How do I open the gas tank on a BMW 528i?

Opening the gas tank on a
BMW 528i
can definitely seem complicated at first, but once you know the trick, it’s simple. Start with the car off and the doors unlocked, then lightly press on the fuel filler panel to release it. The door should open easily. Then, twist the fuel filler cap counter-clockwise and place it the holder on the inside of the fuel filler panel.Once you’re done filling the the car up, twist the gas cap clockwise until you hear a reassuring click. Shut the fuel filler panel by pressing lightly on it, and it will be locked.
Keep in mind, you’ll only be able to open the gas tank if the BMW is off and the doors are unlocked. If the doors are locked, the fuel filler panel won’t open—this is to prevent anyone from tampering with or trying to siphon your fuel.
If for whatever reason you can’t open the fuel filler panel, take your 528i to a BMW dealership to get the problem diagnosed and fixed.
