How do I open the gas tank on a 2014 Nissan Maxima?

I don’t drive very often anymore, but my son asked me to take my grandson to his ice hockey practice, and the ice rink isn’t anywhere near a bus line. Luckily I still have my driver’s license, so I borrowed my daughter-in-law’s car to drive him. On the way home from practice, I asked my grandson to pump the gas. He couldn’t figure out how to open the tank, so I got out, but I couldn’t figure it out either. We laughed about it, but I hated bringing the car back on empty. No need for any more embarrassment when filling up—to open the 2012 Nissan Maxima’s gas tank, just press on the right side of the fuel filler panel and it will pop open.
Many automakers have added safeguards to cut back on fuel theft. This can make it seem tricky to open the fuel door at first, but it’s easy once you learn the trick for your individual vehicle. If you have to drive your grandson to hockey practice again, just follow these steps:
  • Park the Maxima and turn the ignition off
  • The gas tank icon on the cluster gauge has an arrow beside the gas icon—it points to the driver’s side, indicating that’s where the gas tank will found
  • Exit the car, and head to the gas tank
  • Press on the right-side of the gas tank panel, and it will pop open
