How do I negotiate with car insurance claims?
I was in an accident and my car insurance company only wants to partially pay for my claim. What’s the best way to negotiate with them?
“There are several steps you’ll need to follow to negotiate a claim with your car insurance company.
First, you’ll want to have an amount in mind. If your car insurance claim is for medical or personal injury protection, you’ll need to calculate the* total* amount of all your medical bills and expenses. You’ll also want to gather proof of your medical care.
If your claim is for damage to your vehicle, you may need to gather repair estimates and/or expenses related to the accident.
After you’ve determined a settlement amount, you’ll want to write a letter to your car insurance company. This is often called a letter of demand. It will explain to the claims adjuster and insurance company why you feel you should receive a certain settlement amount.
The insurance company might make another offer at that point. From there:
- If it meets your expectations, you can accept it.
- Otherwise, you can continue to negotiate for a higher amount.
Once you agree to an amount with your car insurance company and adjuster, you’ll want to get the agreement in writing. This will ensure you’re given the agreed-upon amount when your insurance company pays out your claim.

Is 10.99% interest too high for a car loan?
"I currently have a credit score of 650 and I make about $5,500 a month. I want to buy a car for $20,000 for 60 months. Every lender I've applied to has given me a double-digit interest rate, and 10.99% is the best I could find. Is this interest rate too high?"
