How do I negotiate a car insurance claim?

I was in an accident last week, and am a little worried my insurance won't pay me what I feel I'm owed. How do I negotiate my car insurance claim?

Getting paid what you feel is fair can be a major challenge. Insurance companies lose money when they need to pay out claims, so claim adjusters often try to keep the payout as small as possible.
Before entering negotiations, you’ll also want to have a good understanding of the value of your car and decide on what you feel is fair. In addition to the value of the car, consider the cost to repair your vehicle or any property, emotional stress, medical expenses, and time. It’s a good idea to not take the first number an insurance company offers as they will expect you to negotiate.
Regardless of whether you’re dealing with your provider or the other driver’s insurance company, it’s important to be as organized as possible. After an accident, document everything, from pictures of the accident to any medical bills or mechanic quotes you receive. A paper trail and documentation will help your case when negotiating.
Clearly document all of this in your demand letter. Once you and your insurance company have agreed on a settlement, get the terms in writing so you have proof of what you’re owed.
