How do I make a claim on damage I caused to my own car?

Last week, I failed to check where my mirrors were before pulling out of my spot, and accidentally knocked one clean off. (It was not my finest moment.) I don't think I have the funds to cover the repairs out of pocket, and I obviously need to be able to drive my car, but I don't know if I can make a claim on damage that I did myself. Where would I even start to file this kind of claim?

First of all, I’m so sorry about the damage to your car! If you want to file this claim, you’ll need to start off by contacting your insurance company’s claims department.
Here’s the process:
  • Call the claims department or file a claim through your insurance company’s mobile app
  • Find out if you have the proper coverage for this claim on your policy
  • Answer all questions honestly
  • Provide photos of the damage if necessary
  • Obtain a repair quote
If your policy doesn’t include
collision insurance
, and you want to have this protection without breaking the bank, you can get free insurance quotes using
Jerry
. Jerry will even help you switch to a new policy and cancel your old one.
