Requests for car cakes skyrocketed following the release of the Cars movies—as did questions about how to make car birthday cakes! Luckily, the process isn’t too difficult.
First, you’ll need to gather the following:
Red, black, white, and yellow food coloring
A 2-inch round cutter, small metal spatula, and fondant smoother
Use the frosting to secure the 8-inch square cake on top of the 9x13 cake to create the basic car shape, then round off the edges of the 9x13 cake to make a hood. Place the carved-off edges on top of the hood with buttercream to create a curved appearance.
Carve the front edge of the 8-inch cake at a steep angle to create the windshield, then cut the rest of the car’s roof at a longer angle. Save the carved scraps and use buttercream to secure them to the back sides of the car to create fenders.
Use the 2-inch cutter and spatula to carve four wheel wells. Coat the whole in buttercream and chill for at least 2 hours. In the meantime, use the food coloring to make red, white, and black fondant and black buttercream.
Cover the chilled cake in red fondant. Cut and place a white rectangle of fondant for the windshield and two smaller rectangles for headlights, then cover the cupcakes in black fondant and place them in the wheel wells. Use the remaining black fondant to make the windows.
Use black and white buttercream to pipe decorative details, and diluted food coloring to paint numbers and decals.
And there you have it—your son’s dream car cake!
