Finding out an accident raised your premium is the worst! It’s extremely common, so know you aren’t alone in a rate increase after having an accident.
When policies renew, both you and your
car insurance
company have a chance to rerate or reconsider your policy. For an insurer, that usually means looking at anything that may have changed in your driving record or claims history. For you, it can mean a chance to shop around and possibly find a lower premium before your policy renews.
Since your insurance is renewing, contact your current company to see whether you qualify for any discounts. You may want to take a driver training course or find out whether you’re eligible for occupational or educational discounts. You could also enroll in a telematics or driving behavior program.
If you carry full coverage or optional coverages such as rental reimbursement, talk to an agent. You may be able to adjust your coverage levels, which could reduce your premium.
You should also request
car insurance quotes
from at least two or three other companies. Insurance rates vary between companies, so shopping around is essential to saving money. Even if you have an accident on your record, you may still be eligible for a lower premium elsewhere.
