How do I look up someone's car insurance?

Is there a good way to look up someone’s car insurance? I was in an accident a few days ago and I didn't get the other person's insurance information.

“Accidents can be traumatic and your health comes first. Most insurance providers give you plenty of time to file a claim, so start by taking some time to recover. Once you’re feeling better, you can get someone else’s insurance information from the police, the DMV, or your insurance provider.
But depending on your situation, one option might be easier than another.
  • If you already filed a police report at the scene, then the police will likely have the other driver’s information. Of course, they’ll only give you this information when you provide them with personal identification and a worthwhile explanation of why you need the information.
  • When you contact your local DMV, you’ll have to provide them with your contact information and a legitimate reason for the request—like a

. Insurance policies are protected under privacy laws, so the DMV can deny your request if your information is false or unverifiable.
  • Your last option is to give your insurance provider any information you have on the other driver. If you can give them a license plate number, they’ll be able to find the other driver’s insurance policy and help you get started on the claims process.
Remember, your insurance premium might increase after an accident, and it could go even higher once you’ve filed a claim.
