How do I know if my insurance covers rental cars?

I blew out the transmission in my car and the mechanic told me it might be a few weeks before I could get it back. As a result, I'm planning on renting a car. I haven't paid for the rental yet, but I submitted an application, and the company asked me if I wanted to purchase insurance through them. I haven't responded yet because I’m curious. Does my current car insurance cover rental vehicles?

Dealing with a mechanical breakdown and having your car in the shop is stressful and expensive. Luckily, your car insurance policy will almost always extend to a rental vehicle. That’s just one less thing you have to worry about!
A standard car insurance policy extends coverage to a rental vehicle up to your normal policy limits and with your regular deductible. But before you rent a vehicle, contact your insurance company and ask about its rental car policies.
Moreover, ask the rental company what its insurance covers. Suppose you happen to get into an accident. In that case, the rental company might charge you for loss-of-use or issue additional fees, so clarification on the policy can make the process easier.
While you’re going over your rental car policy on your insurance, now is an opportune time to compare quotes from several companies.
