How do I know if my car is insured or not?

I’ve been on my grandpa’s car insurance since I was 18, and he passed away this winter. I’ve never had anything to do with any car stuff, so I’m wondering now if I’m still insured. Is there any way I can check?

I’m very sorry for your loss. It can be really tough to handle situations you’ve never had to deal with before, but we’re here to help. Finding out if you’re still insured isn’t hard, but it is really important to find out as soon as possible, especially if you are still driving the car. To know if your car is still insured or not, follow these steps:
  • Check online for your policy or company. Knowing the name of your insurance company is a really good start. Insurance companies typically offer online accounts in association with your policy. If you don’t know the username or password, your email might have some trace of your account in it that you can follow. If you have trouble getting signed in, you can try calling your insurance company and explaining your situation; a representative will be able to help you.
  • Check your car. It’s important to have some sort of
    proof of insurance
on hand in case you are stopped by police. This is why you’re very likely to find some sort of indication of your insurer or policy somewhere in your car. Be sure to look in the glove box, trunk, and center console.
  • Get a new insurance quote. When you request a new
    car insurance quote
, most insurance agents access an online report that shows them your current insurance provider. The agent should be able to tell you about your policy.
If you find that you are no longer covered, consider shopping for new insurance with the
Jerry
app. We’ll get you customized quotes from top providers, so that all you need to do is pick the plan that works best for you. And once you pick one, we’ll even help you switch over.
Best of luck—and hope the practical part of your loss goes as smoothly as possible.
