How do I know if my car has an immobilizer?

I live in an area with a high rate of motor vehicle thefts and I’m worried my car could be stolen. I’m thinking of investing in a vehicle anti-theft device, but I’m unsure if it would be redundant. How can I tell if my car has an engine immobilizer?

If you don’t have
comprehensive coverage
, you’re right to be concerned. Fortunately, almost every vehicle built within the last 20 years has an engine immobilizer.
An engine immobilizer disables the ignition unless it detects the correct key fob, which is identified with a transponder chip. If you try to start the car with the wrong key (or without one), you'll get nowhere fast.
Here’s how to find out if your vehicle has an engine immobilizer:
  • Check the owner’s manual. If you can’t find a copy in your glovebox, try the manufacturer’s website.
  • Check VIN Decoder. If you’re unsure of your car’s model year, enter the VIN online for a detailed information profile.
  • Check Carfax. You might want to check the vehicle history when buying a used car to determine if the immobilizer was damaged in an accident or if the previous owner replaced it.
If all else fails, take your vehicle to a dealership mechanic so they can examine the fob and test whether or not the immobilizer is working. You’ll sleep easier once you know your car’s protected.
