How do I know if my car has an immobiliser?

I've heard I can get a discount if my car has an immobiliser, but how do I check it? Also, do I need to tell my insurance?

Almost all new cars have a type of immobiliser built-in. Essentially, this means that the car engine will not start until an electric signal unlocks it. This electric signal is part of your key.
Modern keys and key fobs have this electric signal built-in, so once you come near your car, it will unlock it. This also means that once you open your vehicle and have your fob on you, it will unlock the engine so you can be on your way.
You probably have an immobiliser if you can start your car without inserting an actual, old-school key.
Sometimes previous owners might have this removed, so if you have an older car or a used car, you might not have it. But you can ask your local mechanic to install one to get that

discount.
