How do I know if I need to fix the catalytic converter on my Dodge Dakota?

I took my Dodge Dakota off-roading, and on a rough patch, I could hear something scraping along the underside of my truck. I didn’t think anything was damaged since the truck was still running okay, but now that it’s been a few weeks, my engine is running really sluggish. Is it possible I damaged something under my truck?

Oh no! If your engine is running poorly and you know you scraped the bottom of your truck, it’s possible you damaged your
Dodge Dakota’s
catalytic converter.
Your catalytic converter sits underneath your truck and is part of your exhaust system—if it’s damaged, your engine performance will decline.
Here are other warning signs that your converter is damaged:
  • Dark exhaust smoke
  • Smell like rotting eggs or sulfur from exhaust
  • Reduced acceleration
  • A lot of heat under your vehicle
If you suspect any damage, it’s important to have a mechanic check your truck and give a proper diagnosis. If you need to replace your catalytic converter, you might be looking at a pretty expensive repair bill. To help save up some cash, consider using
