How do I know if a car has insurance?

Someone hit my car the other day. I truly think they would have driven off if I hadn’t been right there, but the other driver gave me their contact info. I’ve been calling and texting for a couple of days with no response, and I’m sort of freaking out. How can I find their insurance information without their help?

I’m sorry to hear about your accident! Luckily, you can still look up their insurance information by going to the police or a local DMV office.
If you filed a police report at the time of the accident, contacting the police may be the easiest way to get their insurance information.
The DMV will also have information about the other driver’s insurance policy, but this is protected by privacy laws. You will therefore need to provide:
  • The other driver’s license plate number
  • Your contact information
  • A legitimate reason for your request (explain the circumstances of the accident)
After an accident, your insurance premiums will likely go up. It’s a good time to shop around for the best insurance rates using the Jerry app. Jerry will collect car insurance quotes for you in minutes, so you can compare prices and policies for free.
