How do I insure an antique car?

My grandfather was a car collector and left me a 1955 Chevy Bel Air. I'm really excited, but I don't know how to protect it. How do you insure an antique car?

A Chevy Bel Air is a very cool antique car and you most certainly want to protect it, if only out of respect for your grandfather. Thankfully, plenty of
car insurance
companies offer classic and antique car insurance.
Based on its age, you should qualify for
classic car insurance
. Most insurers require the car is:
  • At least 25-years-old
  • Stored in a garage or locked facility
  • Driven under a certain number of miles (usually 5,000 to 7,000 miles per year)
  • Used only for leisurely or club activities
Classic car insurance is important as it insures your vehicle for its worth versus its actual cash value. Without classic car insurance, you wouldn’t get anything close to its worth if it was totaled or damaged.
To get an estimate on classic car insurance, look into at least three different companies.
Progressive
, Grundy, and
GEICO
are three companies that are worth checking out.
If you have car insurance on a personal vehicle, you should reach out to your car insurance company as well. Many insurers offer discounts when you bundle different policies.
