How do I insure a rental car?

I rent cars frequently, and I almost always take the insurance offered by the rental company. Recently, though, a friend told me that I'm wasting money. I just want to make sure I'm covered for any eventuality, but if rental insurance is a waste of money, how do I insure a rental car for cheap?

“That’s a great question! Whether or not you’re wasting money depends on several factors, since you have several options when it comes to insuring rental cars.
You can:
  • Use your own insurance as primary coverage
  • Purchase
    car insurance
    from the rental car company
  • Buy your own
    rental car insurance
through a third-party provider such as Allianz
Many people also use their credit card for rental car insurance, although this coverage is supplementary if you already have your own car insurance.
If you don’t have a separate car insurance policy but you rent frequently, it can save you money to get a
non-owner insurance policy
. One easy way to do this is through
Jerry
; we’ll get you quotes from multiple top-of-the-line providers so that all you have to do is choose the policy that works best for you.
The most important thing is to have enough coverage to feel comfortable, especially if you’re in a new area and aren’t familiar with traffic, roads, or neighborhoods.”
