How do I insure a modified Honda Civic?
I found a great used car online, but it has some modifications. I’m afraid they may affect my ability to get insurance (at least at a good rate). Is it possible to insure a modified Honda Civic?

You’ll be pleased to discover that you can insure a modified
Honda Civic
. But, depending on the type of modification, it may influence your rate. Standard insurance policies won’t cover
upgrades or modifications
unless you purchase an endorsement for additional protection. Repairing or replacing after-market parts is usually more expensive than stock parts. Without the endorsement, insurance companies can deny payment for the modifications. Keep in mind that not all modifications are the same. Modifications that are just superficial or allow the vehicle to become more accessible are usually accepted such as:
- Rims
- Enhanced stereos and speakers
- Custom paint jobs (depending on the insurance company)
- Wheelchair ramp
- Amputee rings
- Scooter lifts
- Almost any modification for people with disabilities is accepted.
Insurance companies usually need a receipt and picture of the modification before applying the coverage to your policy. Since you are getting a used car, see if the prior owner retained any of the receipts.
If the modifications on the Honda Civic are for performance purposes or if any of the modifications are illegal, your insurance company can either deny providing additional coverage or cancel the policy altogether if the changes exceed their guidelines. Some examples are:
- Turbochargers and superchargers
- Nitrous oxide
- Underbody neon lights
- Lift kits exceeding certain height requirements
- Anything that indicates street racing

liability-only policy
