How do I get the spare off a Ford F-150?

My rear passenger tire is in need of replacing. In case it goes flat before I can get a new one, I’d like to know how to use my spare tire. How do you remove the spare tire from a truck?

Knowing how to use your spare tire can definitely save you in a pinch! The spare tire on a Ford F-150 is located under the bed of the truck, behind the rear bumper. Fortunately, removal is easy and should only take about five minutes.
Follow these steps:
  1. Release the hood on your Ford F-150 and locate the tire tool, which can be found mounted across the radiator.
  2. Insert the pointed end of the tool into the slot to the right of the rear license plate**. It will engage with the winch that holds the spare tire in place.
  3. Turn the tool counterclockwise to drop the spare tire to the ground.
  4. Get under the rear of the F-150 and slip the spare tire carrier cable out of the center hole of the rim.
Once the spare tire is free, you can use it as needed. Note that you should drive on a spare minimally. So it’s best to get your actual tire repaired or replaced as soon as possible to avoid a blowout, which can be very dangerous.
