How do I get the co-owner off a car title?

I recently separated from my husband, but we’re co-owners of my daily-use car. He agreed to remove his name from the car title so I’m the sole owner. I’m unfamiliar with the process, so how do I get the co-owner off a car title?

Sorry to hear about your separation, but hopefully, it’s for the best. At the very least, your husband is being cordial enough to sign the title over to you. To get him off the title, treat the transaction as a sale and simply have him sign the title over as a seller and you as the buyer.
To
remove the co-owner from a car title
, follow these steps:
  • Check the title to see if there’s an and or between your names. If there’s an and, you both need to sign the title as sellers. If there’s an or, you technically don’t need your husband’s name and can complete the transaction independently.
  • If you have a lienholder, you will either need to pay the loan off in full or get a lienholder release if you’ve already paid off the loan.
  • Complete the form on the back of the title. Since your name will remain on the title, you’re the buyer. Your husband is the seller.
  • Make sure that you fill out everything correctly. You may also need to have the document notarized if required in your state.
  • Take the title to the DMV, fill out a new title application, and wait for the new title to arrive.
Since you’re now the only owner/driver of the vehicle, don’t forget to update your
car insurance
to reflect the change.
