How do I get someone’s car insurance information?

How do you find out if someone has car insurance? I have a feeling that a particular person I know doesn’t have car insurance. Is there a way I can find that out?

“Hmm, we’re unsure of your motive. But there are certain ways to legally get someone’s car insurance information.
You can only obtain someone else’s insurance information from two entities:
  • The police
  • The DMV
Both sources will ask for a valid reason as to you why you’re seeking someone’s else insurance. This is because a driver’s information is protected under privacy laws. Justifiable reasons will almost solely surround a collision or accident—and there must be proof that the incident took place (like a police report).
If someone hit your vehicle and they have not provided their insurance information, there are a few other methods to obtain that info. Here’s what you could do:
  • Ask while on the scene: Ask the individual for their information. This will only work if that individual is cooperative and willing to give it to you.
  • Call the police: Certain accidents that result in
    personal injury
or cost more than a specific amount in damages (the amount will vary depending on the state) will require the immediate presence of the police. An officer will gather the driver’s name, plate number, and insurance provider.
  • Collect evidence yourself: If the police are not there, gather whatever you can (like the other person’s plate number). Doing so will allow the police to track the culprit down for you.
  • Call the insurance provider: If you managed to get the insurance provider’s name but not their policy number, you can try calling the provider for more details. You may even file a claim with their provider if the individual is not answering your correspondence.
If your insurance provider lets you down during this stressful time, try downloading the

app to shop around for better insurance. Jerry will gather competitive quotes from top insurance providers in seconds. If you find a policy that suits you for a price you’re pleased with, Jerry will even make the switch for you and assist in canceling your old insurance policy—for free.
Hope this helps and good luck!”
