How do I get rid of old car seats?
Where can you dispose of car seats? My child's is really worn out. I live in Utah if that matters.

Trade-in events: If you’re on a budget, then consider taking your child’s car seat to some big-box stores’ trade-in events. Target, for example, offers a 20% discount off other baby gear when you trade in your seat!
Donation: Try visiting a women’s shelter or church to donate your car seat. But be honest about your seat’s condition and make sure your car seat has not expired. Yes, car seats can expire! Their materials slowly degrade and become unsafe to use.
You can check the manufacturer’s guide or manual for your seat’s expiration date.
Recycling center: Call your local recycling center and ask whether they accept car seats. Some centers will require you to remove parts of the car seat before they can receive it. So make sure to ask them about their guidelines as well.
Trash: If all else fails, then your car seat can be disposed of in the trash. But before you do so, make sure to remove:
- All extra padding and foam
- Metal pieces
- Any straps
Also, mark the seat with a clear UNSAFE or EXPIRED sign on the bare plastic so nobody will reuse it. Then, you can just set it out with the rest of your garbage.
