How do I get rid of battery corrosion on my 1998 Dodge Ram?
My dad just gave me his old truck, a 1998 Dodge Ram. While I am thrilled to get a free truck, it needs work. I'm starting with the battery, how I get rid of battery corrosion?

A free truck is always a good thing! Fixing up an older vehicle can be expensive but getting rid of battery corrosion is cheap. All it takes is some basic household supplies and a little elbow grease. Here is what you will need:
- Baking soda
- Rubber gloves
- Water
- Wire brush, paper towel, or sponge
If you are missing any supplies, you can purchase some from a local dollar store. First, make sure the truck has been sitting for at least 30 minutes to give the battery time to cool down. Then follow these steps:
- Put on the protective rubber gloves and do not touch your face or skin once you get started
- Remove the battery’s connecting cables from the terminal. Always remove the black cable first to avoid being shocked
- Apply baking soda to any of the corrosive areas. Corrosive areas will have thick white or bluish-green residue
- Add water to the baking soda
- Once it starts to bubble, clean the affective area and the battery case
- Attach the connecting cables back to the battery red cable first
