How do I get my car unstuck from the snow?

I have to park on the street in my town just outside of Chicago. When they plow the roads, a snow drift causes my car to get stuck. How can I get unstuck?

When the snow plows come through and throw snow around your car, getting unstuck is a pain! And with northern
Illinois
having some of the harshest winters in the country, your concern is understandable.
If you want to get out of the snow quickly and effectively, employ the rocking method.
  • To rock your car out of the snow, just put it in drive and go forward. Then, use the same idea in reverse to create a rocking motion. Make sure not to floor the gas, as this can dig you deeper in the snow.
If the rocking method is ineffective, you can also try a few of these other methods:
  • Shift to a lower gear
  • Dig your tires out
  • Add traction to the area around your tires using kitty litter or a piece of wood
  • Find someone to help push you out of the snow
  • Remove some of the air from your tires
In the future, you may also want to consider adding a bit of extra peace of mind with a roadside assistance membership from
Jerry
. Jerry’s roadside assistance includes jump starts, lockout service, key replacement, and towing for as low as $4.16 a month.
