How do I get low-cost car insurance in California?

I only make about $15,000 a year—I'm working part-time while getting my degree—and I'm a little worried about being able to afford my current insurance policy. I read that you can get cheap insurance in certain states, and if that's true, I could definitely use some! Can I get low-cost insurance in California?

“Kudos to you for taking on a job while studying—that’s tough! I’m happy to say that California is one of just a handful of states to offer government-subsidized low-cost
car insurance
to its residents. Known as California’s Low Cost Auto Insurance, or CLCA, the program is available to those who meet the eligibility requirements as follows:
  • Have a valid California driver’s license
  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Own a vehicle that’s valued at less than $25,000
  • Have a clean driving record
You must also meet income requirements, which vary depending on how many people live in your household and your household income, not just your personal income. Here are some examples of the people in household and the maximum income to receive CLCA:
  • 1 person in household - $32,300
  • 2 people - $43,550
  • 3 people - $54,900
  • 4 people - $66,250
  • 5 people - $77,600
If you have more people in your household, you can go to the CLCA website or call 1-866-602-8861 for more information.
If you find that you don’t meet the eligibility requirements, you still have another affordable option: the
app. We’ll get you personalized quotes from top providers so that all you have to do is pick the plan that works best for you—and we’ll even help you switch! That way, you can focus on your studying and let us do the rest.
Good luck, and happy studying!”
