How do I get insurance when buying a used car?

I'm buying a used 2017 Toyota Camry. I've never had to buy insurance before. How do I get insurance when buying a used car?

“Buying
car insurance
is the same process whether you’re getting a new or used car.
To purchase insurance when
buying a used car
, you will need to provide the insurance company with your:
  • VIN (vehicle identification number)
  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Social Security number
If you’re financing your vehicle, you’ll need to provide the insurance company with your lienholder information as well.
After providing the insurance company with your information, you can select the
type of coverage
you need. From there, you’ll receive a quote and the cost of your policy. If you’re financing the vehicle, remember that you need full coverage car insurance, so conduct your search appropriately.
Aim to collect quotes from three to five insurance companies. As rates vary between companies, having several quotes to choose from is helpful. Once you find a policy you like, you can purchase it to protect your new car.
If you’d rather leave the hard work of gathering quotes to someone else, use
