How do I get driving with a suspended license dismissed?

I was pulled over by a police officer while driving to work and he told me that I had a suspended license. I had no idea that my license was suspended and I’m not sure why it was. Is there any way to get driving with a suspended license dismissed?

In some cases, you may be able to get driving with a suspended license dismissed. However, the scenarios where this is possible are few and far between, and the decision to dismiss the ticket is often up to a judge.
The most common scenarios where you can get your ticket dismissed are:
  • You didn’t know your
    license was suspended
: While ignorance doesn’t often work in a court of law, a judge must inform you that your license was suspended immediately after issuing the ruling. If they don’t, you have a valid reason why you were behind the wheel and the charge might be dismissed.
  • Mitigating circumstances: Some examples might include driving yourself or someone else to the hospital, picking up a sick child from school, or another emergency.
  • You paid a fine or ticket on time but…: the DMV or court made a clerical error or processed the ticket late.
  • Wrongful suspensions: Your license was wrongly suspended by the DMV or court.
If you fall under any of these categories, you should hire a traffic attorney immediately. Many times, an attorney can have these charges dismissed or work out a plea deal that can result in you retaining your license.
