How do I get car insurance in Ontario?

I recently moved provinces to Ontario, and I'm starting to shop around for car insurance. But I have no idea what kind of insurance I'm required to have—before this, I lived in a province that required public insurance, but I've heard it's different here. How do I get car insurance in Ontario?

Your instincts are right on target! While some provinces require public insurance, Ontario offers private insurance options.
In Ontario, your provincial government lets you go entirely through private car insurance if that’s what will work best for you. All you have to do is start comparing policies to see whether public or private insurance is better for you. That way, you can customize your coverage according to your own needs!
In British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, drivers are required to purchase public insurance from Crown Corporation, which covers:
  • Third-party liability
  • Accident benefits that compensate you if you’re injured.
Drivers can then purchase additional public or private insurance for peace of mind, depending on what works better for them.
