How do I get car insurance in British Columbia?

I live up in Vancouver, B.C., and I'm shopping for car insurance for the first time. I know there's a basic level of coverage I need to get, but should I get any additional coverage? And where do I even start?

Start simple! You’re right—every driver in British Columbia is required to have ICBC Basic Autoplan insurance.
This primarily covers
accident-related costs
, including:
  • Medical costs
  • Income replacement
  • Basic vehicle damage
This is a good start, as it covers several important basics. However, a lot of B.C. drivers tend to buy additional coverage, such as
collision
or
comprehensive
, for security and peace of mind.
It all depends on what coverage is best for you, and what your own needs are!
