How do I get car insurance in British Columbia?

I live up in Vancouver, B.C., and I'm shopping for car insurance for the first time. I know there's a basic level of coverage I need to get, but should I get any additional coverage? And where do I even start?

Start simple! You’re right—every driver in British Columbia is required to have ICBC Basic Autoplan insurance.
This primarily covers accident-related costs, including:
  • Medical costs
  • Income replacement
  • Basic vehicle damage
This is a good start, as it covers several important basics. However, a lot of B.C. drivers tend to buy additional coverage, such as collision or comprehensive, for security and peace of mind.
It all depends on what coverage is best for you, and what your own needs are!
