How do I fix the thermostat in my car?

The temperature in my car has been fluctuating suddenly and now there is coolant leaking. I spoke with a mechanic over the phone and they determined there was a problem with my thermostat and it needs to be replaced. I’d rather do it myself than pay a mechanic $300. What the mechanic said is true, you’ll have to replace the thermostat to fix it. You can save money and only pay the cost of parts by replacing the thermostat yourself.
Follow these steps to replace the thermostat in your car:
  • Locate your thermostat
  • Remove the host clamp
  • Disconnect the radiator hose
  • Unfasten the bolts that hold the thermostat housing in place
  • Remove the old thermostat and the gasket
  • Install the new gasket and thermostat
