How do I fix a tear or hole in my car upholstery?

I was moving to my new place last week, and I packed my car full of stuff. A day or two after unloading, I noticed a huge tear in my backseat (it’s cloth fabric)! Are there any good ways to fix my car upholstery?

Congrats on your new place! Luckily, you can fix small to medium-sized tears in your upholstery with a thread and needle or patches! But you may need a professional’s help for major damage.
For minor tears, use a curved needle and thread that matches the color of your upholstery to stitch up the seat. Practice a few stitches before you start, and then stitch up the tear. After you’re done, cover the damage with fabric sealant to keep it safe.
If the rip is more severe, follow these steps to patch it:
  • Purchase a piece of fabric that matches your cloth seats. Walmart, Michael’s, or other hobby stores are good places to find cheap cloth.
  • Purchase a cloth fabric adhesive.
  • Use an X-acto knife to cut away excess fabric and even out the edges.
  • Cut a piece of fabric adhesive and insert it under the hole or tear.
  • Cut a piece of fabric to match the size of the hole or tear.
  • Place the fabric patch on top of the fabric adhesive.
  • Follow the instructions on your fabric adhesive to permanently attach the patch (this will likely involve some ironing).
Hopefully, your car seat now looks as good as new! Next time, try laying some old blankets over your seats before you pile in the boxes.
