How do I fix a loose fuse in my car?

I recently noticed that my plug-in GPS intermittently loses power. I know a few things about cars, so I’m pretty sure a loose fuse is to blame. I’m nervous to mess around with the fuse box, but I want to try to fix this issue myself. How can I fix a loose fuse in my car?

Faulty or irregular power in a circuit certainly is linked with issues in the fuse. A loose fuse could be its own issue, or it could signal a problem with the fuse terminal (to which it’s connected) or fuse box (which is connected to the terminal).
The process to fix a loose fuse can be dangerous—if you feel at all unprepared or lack the necessary equipment, it’s best to just take the car in to a mechanic.
If you want to try to resolve the issue yourself, you can try to improve the fuse-to-terminal connection by taking a small piece of metal (like a pick) and pressing the sides of the fuse into the terminal.
Make sure that the metal piece is only touching the terminal and no other metal car parts.
If this doesn’t seem to work, just switch your device to a different circuit (i.e., plug it into a different outlet), if you have a spare one.
If you think you need a more formal inspection or a part replacement, don’t hesitate to call a mechanic.
