Oh no! Sorry to hear about the crack. You can fix most cracked plastic bumper covers with plastic welding or plastic mesh and adhesive, depending on the size of the crack.
With the right products, you may be able to complete this repair yourself at home. It is a time-consuming process, so most people prefer to
get a quote
from a body repair shop.Here are the required materials:
- Repair adhesive like epoxy
- Plastic mesh
- Body filler, if required
- A set of multi-grain sandpaper
- A foam rubber sanding block
- A hand drill
You can also purchase a pre-assembled kit like Bondo’s bumper repair kit. JB Weld is another popular adhesive brand, but it takes longer to set.
The repair process begins with sanding down the paint around the crack. The adhesive needs to bond directly to the plastic. Now, place a small bit in your drill and put several small holes around the cracked area. This will allow the epoxy to bond to itself in addition to bonding with the plastic, ensuring a better seal.
Then, sand and clean the area thoroughly. Insert the body filler if necessary. Put on your gloves, then apply a section of mesh followed by epoxy. Trace and trim and allow the epoxy to cure. Finish by sanding until the epoxy is flush with the rest of the bumper.
