How do I fix a car seat cushion?

I let my dog ride in the backseat with me on errands sometimes, and I noticed that his nails have scratched and even punctured the seat cushions in places. My seats have fabric upholstery and I was wondering: how do I fix a car seat cushion myself?

Man’s best friend definitely isn’t a best friend to car seats, but thankfully repairing your seat cushions isn’t an expensive or difficult process. All you’ll need is an upholstery repair kit, something you should be able to find online or at your local automotive store.
Once you’ve purchased an upholstery kit—which should contain an upholstery needle, upholstery gel, colorant, and several patches—follow the steps below.
For rips and tears:
  • Using the thread and upholstery needle, sew closed any small gashes or rips in the fabric with an X-shaped stitch.
  • If there are any larger tears that can’t be fixed by stitches alone, cut out a fabric patch in the shape of the tear and apply upholstery gel to the underside. Place the patch over the tear and press down until the gel has bonded.
For punctures:
    1. Mix the colorant and sealing gel until it roughly matches the color of your cushions and fill in any small holes or punctures.
    1. Use a ruler, paint stirrer, or any other item with a flat surface to level off the gel. Let it dry.
Now your cushions should look good as new!
