How do I fix a broken car door hinge?

My car’s pretty old. I’ve been driving it since high school, and now the front door is practically hanging off the frame. I’m told the problem is the door hinge, apparently, it’s worn out. How do I replace my broken car door hinge?

Since high school, you say? Yeah, it might be time to replace those hinges and get that door closing properly again.
To fix a broken car door hinge yourself, you’ll need a couple of things on standby:
  • Car jack
  • Car door hinge replacement kit. This will commonly include new pins and bushings and costs around $15 to $20
  • Protective eyewear
Here’s a play by play of how to instal itl:
  • Open the door and support it with a
    jack
  • Remove the pin The pins hold the car door to the body of the car. To remove them, simply tap them out with a hammer.
  • Unbolt the old hinge
  • Remove the bushings from the hinge Bushings are small joints, usually made of rubber, that serve a dual purpose: to help absorb and control movement; and to prevent metal-to-metal contact. You can find them at the top and bottom of the hinge arms.
  • Replace with new bushings You can do this by lightly tapping them in place with a hammer.
  • Re-bolt hinge and reinstall pins
We’d also recommend opening and closing your door a few times to make sure that it’s swinging smoothly. After that, you’ll be good to go.
