How do I find out what car insurance I have?

How do I check what car insurance I have? After buying my first car, I opted out of my parents' insurance. Now I'm having a hard time figuring out who my provider is.

Being a first-time car owner can be intimidating, but once you find out who your provider is, you’ll be good to go!
While the process may seem daunting, there are a few ways to find out what car insurance you have:
  1. Check with your last-known provider: Contact your parents’ provider to find out if you have an existing policy with them. Chances are you stayed with the company your parents recommended.
  2. Search your car: Most people tend to keep a copy of their insurance card in their vehicle as proof of insurance, which is required if they are pulled over or involved in an accident. The insurance card will have the name of your provider, as well as your policy number, printed on it. Start by checking your center console or glove compartment.
  3. Call your secretary of state: Depending on where you live, the Office of the Secretary of State keeps records of insured vehicles. You can visit in person or give them a call to help track down your insurance using your VIN or driver’s license number.
As a first-time car owner, you also want to make sure you have great insurance.
