How do I find out if someone has insurance on their car?

How can I find out if someone else has car insurance? I was on my way to take my son to his swim lessons and an older man who was driving beside me changed lanes and crashed into my car. Thankfully, my son and I are fine. When I tried exchanging auto insurance information, the man refused to cooperate.

I am so glad to hear you and your son are not hurt from that ordeal!
Don’t worry, there are other ways to find out if someone has auto insurance in the aftermath of an accident.
There are three options to find out if someone has car insurance to cover your damages: Contact the police and file a report: You can request information on someone else’s auto insurance from the police. Be sure you provide the license plate number of the other driver and describe how the collision occurred. You will also need to file a police report, which your insurance company will need to complete your car accident claim.
Contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV): You can request information detailing someone else’s auto insurance as long as you provide
  • Your contact details
  • Reason for the request
  • Additional verifiable documents, such as a police report
Contact your insurance company: Speak with your provider. Let them know the at-fault driver would not give you their insurance information and then left the scene.
If you find out that the driver at fault is
underinsured or uninsured
, you will need to file a claim with your insurance company. Your insurance provider will conduct an investigation and determine who was at fault. Once the claim is processed, you should be reimbursed for damages.
If your current policy doesn’t cover as much of your claim as you would like, consider switching providers.
